The same team that sat at the top of the girls hockey power rankings for seven of the eight weeks of the season end the year in the No. 1 spot.

The team from Essex ran through the regular season, blew through the early rounds of the playoffs and then faced a true test in the final against BFA-St. Albans before earning the comeback win and the state title. All more than enough to land them in the season-ending top spot.

Where did the rest of the teams land in the end? Check out the rankings below and leave thoughts and comments.

1. Essex (18-1-4): After dominating during the regular season, the Hornets were trailing heading into the third period of the championship game. But a clutch performance from Kathleen Young and a OT winner from Melanie Theriault helped Essex win its second title in three years.

2. BFA-St. Albans (17-4-2): The Comets churned out yet another strong team and earned their 11th Division I state championship game appearance. The overtime loss to Essex was only BFA’s second loss in a title game.

3. Middlebury (19-3-1): All season long, the Lake Division was a race between Middlebury, Burr and Burton and Northfield. In the end, the Tigers came out on top with a one-goal win over the Bulldogs. The Lake’s top seed, it wasn’t easy for the Tigers, who needed double OT to avoid an upset bid from Stowe.

4. Burr and Burton (17-4-2): Despite a late game barrage, Burr and Burton could not find the tying goal in the title game and fell 2-1 to the Tigers. It was a strong season for the Bulldogs, who scored 68 goals and returned the title game for the second time in three years.

5. Spaulding (14-6-2): The Crimson Tide had another strong season, advancing all the way to the semifinals before falling to BFA-St. Albans. The tough 5-0 loss to the Comets drops them to No. 5 instead of keeping them above the two Lake Division squads.

6. Champlain Valley-South Burlington (9-10-2): The Rebel Hawks nearly pulled off the upset in the quarterfinals, falling to host Spaulding 6-5 in overtime. The tight playoff loss showed the CVU-SB was a Metro Division contender to the end.

7. Colchester (12-9-1): The Lakers made their first Division I semifinal appearance this season behind a strong performances from goaltender Erica Hoffman, forward Taylor Dion and defensemen Jensen Hamblett. With the program in a bit of limbo with numbers the next few years, it was a strong stand from Colchester.

8. Northfield (16-4-2): The third team in the Lake Division, hard to put them this far below Middlebury and Burr and Burton. The Marauders lost 1-0 to the Bulldogs in the semifinals, proving not much separated the three teams at the top.

9. North Country (12-8-1): Jumping into the Metro Division after an appearance in the Lake Division final last season, the Falcons held their own in the tough division. North Country nearly knocked off Colchester in the quarterfinals, falling 1-0.

10. Stowe (11-11): While the Lake Division was a three-team race for most of the season, the Raiders put their best effort into breaking into the top 3. Behind a 53-save performance from Danielle Mayo, Stowe took top-seeded Middlebury to double overtime before falling 1-0.
